Horizons of Understanding. An Anthology of Theoretical Anthropology in Europe
Jan van Bremen, Vesna Godina and Jos Platenkamp (eds.)
As in the past, the present theoretical landscape in Europe in the field of anthropology presents a diverse and heterogenious picture. The biennial conferences of the recently established European Association of Social Anthropologists reveal however, that the vitality of European anthropology stems not in the least from this very diversity in theoretical and methodological outlook. European traditions in anthropology, of old associated with the chairs established towards the end of the 19th century, are themselves subject to important processes of transformations and revitalisation, whereas new centres of anthropological thought are displaying a rapid and impressive growth. Added to this is the recent opening up of the East European and former Sovjet centres of learning, which may lead once more to the profound mutual inspiration that has provided such an important basis for the development of anthropological thought.
The present volume presents a choice of contributions illustrating the diversity of anthropological theory and methodology among European scholars.

Texts and Tales. Studies in Oral Tradition
Jarich Oosten (ed.)
Texts and Tales is a collection of papers presented at the Ph.D. seminars on oral traditions organized by the CNWS in Leiden. The papers represent current research by Ph.D. students at the CNWS as well as by senior scholars invited to lecture at the seminars. The book covers a wide range of themes dealing with symbolism, diffusion, function, and significance of oral traditions in Africa, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and the Arctic. Different theoretical approaches to the study of oral traditions in anthropology and linguistics are applied. The central focus of the book is on the interpretation and explanation of oral traditions in relation to their ethnographic context.

Culture, development and communication. Essays in honour of J. D. Speckmann
Wasif A. Shadid and Peter J.M. Nas (eds.)
In many anthropological and sociological studies, modernization and development have been primarily considered as aspects of Western influence. In this ethnocentric view, the failure of development programmes in non-Western societies has consequently been ascribed to local cultural conditions, without paying attention to the communication process between the cultures involved. In recent anthropological literature, discussions about the role of culture in development and communication are numerous, but generally of a superficial character.
This book is an attempt to provide an insight into the often, theoretically as well as empirically, problematic relationship between the concepts of culture, development and communication. The contributors support and explain the thesis that a more profound understanding of other cultures is a basic condition for successful development cooperation as well as for optimal transcultural communication. The authors discuss this point on the basis of applied research projects in a number of fields, such as rural and urban change, health care, education, transmigration and interethnic relations.
This book is directed towards social scientists and national and international agencies that are working in the fields of development cooperation and transcultural communication.

De ondergang van de Vroege Staat
H.J.M. Claessen (red.)

Gifts to the Dead and the Living. Forms of exchange in San Miguel Tzinacapan, Sierra Norte de Puebla, Mexico
Rossana Lok
Gifts to the Dead and the Living is based on research in Mexico in 1985 among the Nahuas of the Sierra Norte de Puebla, Central Mexico. As outlined in the Preface written by Alessandro Lupo (Rome), the book fills a gap in our knowledge of Mesoamerican rites of the dead and about the religious thoughts of the Sierra Nahuas in particular. The book discusses in detail the various rituals surrounding the death of a person, and the rites carried out annually at Todos Santos, All Saints' and All Souls' Days. Lok indicates the relationship between the various forms of gift-exchange that take place on both occasions. The writer finally discusses the theories of Hubert and Mauss concerning sacrifice and offering, and poses the question whether the distinction between both types of oblation can be maintained.

Dynamiek in discussie
