The
basis of this work is a collection of Mandarin Chinese
dialogues recorded on tape and transcribed so as to constitute
a spoken corpus of 5,000 sentences. Using examples from
this corpus, the author discusses several issues in the
analysis of spoken Mandarin. The main purpose of the work
is to demonstrate the viability of a data-oriented approach
to syntax and semantics. In this approach, both the way
people talk and what they talk about are relevant for
the linguistic description. The procedures and terms used
in the analyses are introduced step by step without assuming
more than an everyday familiarity with linguistic terminology.

The present book deals with the Minahasans, who live in
the extreme northeast of the island of Sulawesi, formerly
Celebes, in Indonesia. The Minahasans occupy one of the
most fertile places of that part of the world. Up until
the beginning of the nineteenth century the Minahasans
still live in tribal groups, speaking different, though
related languages. With the coming of the colonial powers
dramatic changes set in, and by the middle of that century
the Minahasans converted en masse to Christianity. Minahasa
became incorporated into the market economy of the Dutch
East Indies and after initial set-backs the Minahasans
achieved considerable economic progress. Many Minahasans
enlisted in the Dutch East Indian army, and the use of
Dutch and Malay became widespread. Soon Minahasa was dubbed
the Twelfth Province of The Netherlands. The integration
of Minahasa into the Indonesian Republic did not proceed
smoothly, but nowadays the region has found a firm position
in the Republic, with Manado, its main town, as the capital
of the Province of North Sulawesi.

De eerste helft van dit boek is een grammaticale beschrijving
van het Bumthang, met zo'n 30.000 sprekers een belangrijke
regionale taal van het Himalaya-koninkrijk Bhutan. Het
Bumthang behoort tot de archaïsche Oost-Bodische
tak van de Tibeto-Birmaanse taalfamilie. Deze verkenning
beschrijft de meest in het oog springende grammaticale
bijzonderheden in de vier hoofddialecten van de taal,
waarbij de nadruk is gelegd op de klank- en vormleer.
Ook zijn er een bescheiden woordenlijst en een beschrijving
van de verwantschapsterminologie toegevoegd.
De Leidse taalkundige George van Driem heeft deze studie
in Midden-Bhutan uitgevoerd in opdracht van de Bhutanese
overheid. Krachtens het protocol zal een uitgebreider
Engelstalige versie van deze taalbeschrijving pas na het
verschijnen van de tweede, herziene uitgave van de grammatica
van de nationale taal, het Dzongkha, kunnen worden uitgebracht.
De tweede helft van het boek biedt een overzicht van de
inheemse talen van Bhutan die George van Driem eveneens
in opdracht van de Bhutanese overheid in kaart heeft gebracht.
De hier geboden taalkundige informatie over Bhutan en
zijn inwoners wordt met het verschijnen van het boek voor
het eerst in het Westen toegankelijk gemaakt.

Liu Zhiyuan

De In Alle Toonaarden (zhugongdiao) was een vorm van professionele vertelkunst
in laat-Middeleeuws China. Het verhaal werd verteld in proza
en op rijm. De berijmde gedeelten werden geschreven op basis
van bestaande melodieën, vandaar ook de benaming van het
genre. De In Alle Toonaarden was een vorm van commercieel amusement dat werd
aangeboden aan de stedelijke theaters. Als zodanig werden dergelijke
verhalen door de Chinese culturele elite ook nooit beschouwd
als onderdeel van de 'echte' literatuur. Als gevolg daarvan
zijn er maar weinig teksten in dit genre overgeleverd.
De In Alle Toonaarden van Liu Zhiyuan beschrijft het
huwelijk van Liu Zhiyuan met de Derde Dochter Li. Liu Zhiyuan
was de stichter van de Late Han-dynastie (946-950 n. Chr.).
Hij leefde van 895 tot 948. Hij begon zijn carrière als
gewoon soldaat, en stierf als keizer. Zijn dynastie bestuurde
het land maar voor enkele jaren; hijzelf stierf na een jaar,
en zijn zoon, Chengyou, werd na twee jaar verdreven door een
generaal van zijn vader.
De tekst van het verhaal werd in de vroege twintigste eeuw gevonden
in de ruïnes van Karakhoto, Binnen-Mongolië. Het boek
is de oudst bekende gedrukte tekst in de volkstaal; de gedrukte
tekst is ook uitzonderlijk om het gebruik van typografische
middelen om de tekst en de opbouw daarvan zichtbaar te maken.
Ter aanvulling bevat dit boek een vertaling van de novelle Shi
Hongzhao longhu junchen hui ('Shi Hongzhao: de ontmoeting van
draak en tijger, vorst en paladijn'). Dit verhaal beschrijft
het huwelijk en de vroege loopbaan van twee ondergeschikten
van Liu Zhiyuan. Het verhaal sluit qua onderwerp, woordgebruik
en benadering nauw aan bij de In Alle Toonaarden van Liu Zhiyuan.

of the nine papers in this volume deals with some aspect of
the literary interface between China and the West, or of closely
related internal developments in Chinese literature: the early
20th-century poet Xu Yunuo, Zhang Xianliang's fiction, Mao Dun's
interest in the Dutch playwright Speenhoff, Lu Xun and Frederik
van Eeden, Li He's poetry in the early post-Mao period, affinities
between Ulysses and early 1930s Chinese fiction, the poetry
of Duoduo, Dutch loan-words and loan-translations in modern
Chinese, and Wallace Stevens in Chinese translation.
The authors - all former students of Erik Zürcher - have
approached this Festschift in the spirit of Zürcher's own
interest in cultural interaction, bringing to it a wealth of
information on hitherto little-studied aspects of modern Chinese
culture.
The result is a many-sided forum which will be of interest not
only to sinologists but to anyone interested in comparative
literature, modern world literature, or the processes of literary
and linguistic interchange.
