| George
van Driem (with the collaboration of Karma Tshering of

|
This
Dzongkha textbook by George van Driem provides a practical
introduction to the national language of Bhutan for
both linguist and layman. The script, phonology and
grammar of Dzongkha are explained at length in eight
chapters. The phonological romanization officially known
as Roman Dzongkha, employed throughout the book, makes
the course suitable both for learners who wish to master
the Bhutanese script as well as for those who wish to
acquire only a spoken command of the language. Each
chapter is followed by a section of translation and
reading exercises with vocabulary lists. A description
of the ethnolinguistic composition of the Himalayan
kingdom is provided in an introduction. An answer key
to the exercises and several appendices are to be found
in the back of the book.
The textbook comes with a set of audio compact disks
in a multibox, containing a digital soundtrack narrated
by a native speaker of the prestige dialect of Dzongkha
from western Bhutan. Book and cd's are sold as a set
and are not available separately.
An
essential book for anyone who wants to learn Dzongkha.

Narrative
Strategies. Essays on South Asian Literature and Film
Vasudha Dalmia and Theo Damsteegt
The fifteen essays collected in this
volume present analyses of a wide variety of modern and pre-modern
South Asian narratives in Bengali, Hindi, Panjabi, Tamil,
and Urdu. While classics such as Hir Varis Shah, Krittibasa's
Ramayana, Ruswa's Umrao Jan Ada, and Phalke's pioneering film
venture Raja Harischandra come under discussion, texts less
widely known, though equally significant, are also analysed
in vivid detail. A wide range of analytical methods are applied,
including narratology, reception theory, genre theories, rhetoric,
and the theory of transtextuality. Though the papers focus
on applied analysis, an effort has been made in each essay
to explain the basic tenets of the methods used. These methods
bring into focus such vital issues as the uses of tradition,
the renegotiation of gender roles, and shifts in genre and
literary categories.
In its explicit awareness of methodology in the analysis of
South Asian narratives, this volume may well be called a pioneering
venture.

| De
Nederlandse koloniale lobby. Ondernemers en de Indische
politiek, 1914-1940 |
|
| Arjen
Taselaar |
|
bevocht.
In De Nederlandse koloniale lobby geeft Arjen
waren. In de jaren 1914-1940 waren in Nederland diverse
Indische ondernemersorganisaties actief.
organisaties werkten banken, cultuurmaatschappijen, handelshuizen,
mijnbouwmaatschappijen en andere bedrijven samen. Conflicten

| Malayu
Ambong. Phonology, Morphology, Syntax |
|
| Don

|
Malay
is the most widespread language of insular Southeast Asia.
Being a border crossing medium in a rapidly developing
region, it is also the most important language. Malay
not only includes the national languages of Indonesia,
Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam, but also numerous
dialects and pidginized versions.
This descriptive study deals with Ambonese Malay, a regional
dialect of the Central Moluccas (eastern Indonesia), which
is both the mother tongue for several hundreds of thousands
of Moluccans, as well as a vehicle towards modernization
for isolated communities. Based on a large corpus of field
data, this grammar analyses the main phonological, morphological,
and syntactic features. Included are four texts glossed
and translated from live recordings.

Kulasekhara Perumals of Travancore. History and State
Formation in Travancore from 1671 to 1758 |
| |
| Mark
de Lannoy |
|
The Kulasekhara perumals of Travancore presents
the history of the kingdom of Travancore between 1671
and 1758. Under Martanda Varma (1729-1758) this kingdom,
now the southern part of modern Kerala, underwent rapid
changes in both the army and administration. The old established
kshatriya aristocracy gave way to new groups. The political
scene in Kerala too, rapidly changed after the failed
attempts of the Dutch to curb the growing influence of
Martanda Varma on Kerala politics. At the end of Martanda
Varma's reign he had conquered the major part of Kerala.

| Kar
glin Zi khro. A Tantric Buddhist Concept |
|
| Henk
Blezer |
|
Aim of the research presented in this publication is to
clarify the conceptual history of two elements that are
prominent in Tibetan tantrism (Buddhist and "Bon").
The study zooms in on qualitative representations of diverse
levels of human consciousness as they are met with in
descriptions of so-called intermediate states (bar do-s)
and also on more quantitative "mappings" of
the human mind, representation by means of a composite
arrangement, a host of peaceful and wrathful deities (zhi
ba dang khro bo'i lha tshogs, in short, zhi khro). Focal
point of this investigation into speculations regarding
the concepts bar do and zhi khro is the origin and development
of one specific bar do or intermediate state, the bar
do of (the confrontation with) reality as it is (chos
nyid kyi bar do, in "Bon"-tradition called bon
nyid or zhi khro bar do), in which these two concepts
appear in conjunction. Speculations regarding this intermediate
state are apparently relatively late developments that
can be localised in a specific approach to tantric theory
and practice called "Great Perfection" (rDzogs
chen), current mainly among the old sect of Tibetan Buddhism
(rNying ma pa-s) and the so-called "Bon"-traditions
of Tibet. "Bon"-traditions could not be fully
covered in the research presented here, investigations
regarding these highly interesting traditions are in progress
and will be published in a subsequent work.

| Form
and Function of Pitch Movements in Indonesian |
|
| Ewald
Ebing |
|
Form
and function of pitch movements in Indonesian applies
the method of analysis-by-synthesis to the intonation,
or speech melody, of Standard Indonesian. The primary
aim of this study was the construction of a phonetically
explicit, and experimentally verifiable, intonation model.
After an introductory chapter on the language and a literature
survey, a number of phonetic experiments are reported,
in which acoustic and perceptual speech processing techniques
were used to analyze and model the intonation patterns
of human speakers. The results were experimentally evaluated
in terms of both formal and functional adequacy. For the
first method, Indonesian listeners compared the acceptability
of model-generated intonation contours with original melodies
produced by a human speaker. The second approach concentrated
on two major functions of intonation: accentuation (the
highlighting of important syllables, words or phrases)
and prosodic boundary marking (the demarcation of coherent
groups of words within an utterance). Finally, the author
discusses possible applications in the fields of education
and speech technology.

| Watarai
Shintô. An intellectual history of the Outer Shrine
in Ise |
|
| Mark
Teeuwen |
|
The Shintô tradition of the Watarai priests of Ise,
known as "Watarai-" or "Ise Shintô",
is generally regarded as the wellspring of Shintô
thought. For that reason, it has received much attention
from Japanese scholars, who have made it the subject of
an ongoing debate concerning the origins of Shintô
as an autonomous tradition. In the West, on the other
hand, Watarai Shintô has as yet hardly been touched
upon.
This book follows the Watarai tradition from the Kamakura
period, when it first emerged, to its disintegration in
the late Edo period.
Changes in Watarai theology are related both to social
and economic developments at the Ise shrines, and to shifts
in the intellectual landscape of Japan as a whole. Theological
processes such as the rewriting of foundation myths and
the development of new rituals are seen as answers to
new questions, raised by the shifting social; roles of
the Watarai priests, buy changes in the relationship between
the Inner and Outer Shrines of Ise, and by changing perceptions
of the meaning of worship. As well as offering a detailed
account of the development of the Watarai tradition, the
book also presents a new outlook on the processes that
shaped the history of Shintô thought in general.

| Common
West Caucasian. The Reconstruction of its Phonological
System and Parts of its Lexicon and Morphology |
|
| Viacheslav
A. Chirikba |
|
This book deals with the reconstruction of Common West
Caucasian, the postulated proto-language of the West
Caucasian (Abkhazo-Adyghean) languages, Abkhaz, Circassian
and the recently extinct Ubykh. The book contains a
synchronous description of the phonetic systems of all
West Caucasian dialects and presents intermediary reconstructions
of the Proto-Abkhaz, Proto-Circassian and Proto-Ubykh
phonemic systems. The reconstructed intermediary proto-languages
serve as a basis for the reconstruction of Common West
Caucasian. Besides phonology, the book deals also with
certain aspects of the morphology (nominal and verbal
affixation, ablaut) and the lexicon of Common West Caucasian.
Finally, the author touches upon the problem of the
external relations of Common West Caucasian, namely,
with the East Caucasian (or Nakh-Daghestanian) languages,
and with the long extinct Hattic language of ancient
Asia Minor (early second millennium B.C.).

relations sociales. Ce livre décrit de façon
à la fois précise et très globale
les actes, échanges, idées et valeurs les
plus importants de cette société, et leurs
significations.

Language
Shattered. Contemporary Chinese Poetry and Duoduo
Maghiel
van Crevel
Language
Shattered
is both a history of poetry from the People's Republic of China
and a case study of the oeuvre of a leading Chinese poet. After
the stifling orthodoxy of the 1950s and early 1960s, the terror
of the Revolution (1966-1976) brought official Chinese literature
to a total standstill. At the same time, disillusioned youths
were more or less accidentally exposed to a varied body of foreign
literature and began writing underground poetry. In the 1980s
this poetry scene, now above ground, became one of pluriformity
and proliferation in both official and unofficial circuits.
The brutal suppression of the 1989 Protest Movement gave it
an exile offshoot. The
historical overview in Part I of this book is complimented in
Part II by a discussion of Duoduo's poetry. Duoduo's career
as a poet reflects the vicissitudes of Chinese Experimental
poetry - and his beautiful, headstrong poems merit attention
in themselves. They show that Chinese poetry is not just of
interest as a chronicle of Chinese politics, but as literature
in its own right.
