Gifts to the Dead and the Living. Forms of exchange in San Miguel Tzinacapan, Sierra Norte de Puebla, Mexico
Rossana Lok
Gifts to the Dead and the Living is based on research in Mexico in 1985 among the Nahuas of the Sierra Norte de Puebla, Central Mexico. As outlined in the Preface written by Alessandro Lupo (Rome), the book fills a gap in our knowledge of Mesoamerican rites of the dead and about the religious thoughts of the Sierra Nahuas in particular. The book discusses in detail the various rituals surrounding the death of a person, and the rites carried out annually at Todos Santos, All Saints' and All Souls' Days. Lok indicates the relationship between the various forms of gift-exchange that take place on both occasions. The writer finally discusses the theories of Hubert and Mauss concerning sacrifice and offering, and poses the question whether the distinction between both types of oblation can be maintained.
