Trop
longtemps, les alliances hiérarchiques entre maître
et esclave, trait particulier de l'aire culturelle mandingue,
ont été considerées comme le `résidu'
d'un système politique féodal traditionnel
dont la `modernité' aurait sapé les fondements
politiques et idéologiques.
Cette étude, basée sur plusieurs enquêtes
sur le terrain effectuées dans les communautés
mandingues du Wuli (Sénégal), montre que
la compétition autour des statuts sociaux est un
phénomène tout à fait `contemporain'.
Loin d'être fixe, et toujours sujet à discussion,
le couple maître/esclave s'y manifeste sous forme
d'une modalité particulière de la relation
oncle maternel/fils de soeur: une relation d'autorité
basée sur une forme spécifique d'échange
de dons et de prestation. Les `stratégies de flatterie'
qu'on met en oeuvre pour établir des alliances
hiérarchiques consistent à donner des femmes;
la nature particulière de ces stratégies
se manifeste pendant la cérémonie de mariage.
C'est là où s'exprime avec force l'ideé
que maître et esclaves sont indispensable à
la permanence de la société.

Form
and Meaning in Fulfulde describes the sound structure
and word formation processes of Fulfulde based on the
data of the Maasina dialect (Mali) with comparative data
from other dialects including Ringimaaji (Cameroon).
Both Maasinankoore and Ringimaajiire - the dialects on
which the author's fieldwork was based - are not commonly
studies varieties of Fulfulde. In the first part of the
book the author sheds new light on some characteristic
features of Fulfulde phonology such as word stress, consonant
alternation, and vowel length and its interaction with
syllable structure and stress.
In the second part, the author reviews the structure of
verbs and their extensions, and presents new and innovative
analyses of the nominal class marker system (the suffix
grades and the noun classes) of Fulfulde. She argues that
the behaviour of the different variants of each class
marker is constrained by semantic principles rather than
by the lexical nature, phonotactic or syllable structure
of the stem as other linguists have traditionally argued.
The author also looks in detail at the semantics of the
individual 22 classes in Maasina and explores the principles
and cultural foundations of the semantic associations
among the members of each class. For instance, the author
explains how one can account for the treatment of cows,
fire and sun as members of the same class in terms of
prototype semantics and from cultural ideas about these
entities and their relationships recoverable in part from
Fulbe mythology.

de Sunjara est le récit le plus fameux. Sa valeur
pour la culture africaine est comparable à l'oeuvre
d'Homère pour la culture européenne. L'épopée
de Sunjara raconte l'histoire de la fondation de l'empire
légendaire du Mande, qui représente l'origine
des peuples soudanais.
Tous les sept ans, les griots - les bardes traditionnels
-de l'Afrique de l'Ouest se réunissent sans le
village de Kela, au Mali, pour y assister à la
déclamation de l'épopée de Sunjara.
Lansine Diabate, né en 1926, est 'Maître
de la Parole' des griots de Kela. Voici sa version de
l'épopée de Sunjara.

Central
African Hunter-Gatherers contributes to the debate
on hunter-gatherers, and their relation to the larger
world, by providing a multifarious platform for current
debates in 'pygmy' studies and development. The apparent
ambiguous nature of the subject will challenge readers
to reconsider the assumptions they might hold regarding
the inhabitants of the central African rainforest.
The first section of the book begins by placing the Central
African hunter-gatherers in a historical and and social
perspective based on archaeological, linguistic and ethnomusicological
data. It then explores their connections and contradistinctions
with fellow foragers, whether historical, prehistorical
or imaginary 'authentic', as well as with neighbouring
farmers. The relationship between hunter-gatherers and
their physical environment is the theme of the next section.
This is followed by a section in which processes of social
change are discussed, the core issue being sedentarization
of hunter-gatherers and the dynamics of their bonds to
farming communities. The final section deals with hunter-gatherers
on the international scene. It draws attention to the
impact of recent, sometimes dramatic, events, and discusses
the natural resources and the hunter-gatherers' rights
to use them.

als Zuid-Afrika. Het einde van de Apartheid, de eerste
democratische verkiezingen in 1994 en Mandela's inzet
voor wederopbouw, verzoening en ontwikkeling luidden een
nieuwe fase in. Het juridische en bestuurlijke bestel
van het land verandert in hoog tempo. De nieuwe Grondwet
heeft grote invloed op het bestaande Rooms-Hollandse,
